Congratulations to the Team of 2012!!!
On Saturday, November 17, 2012, the top senior boys and girls from the state of Illinois raced against the top seniors from Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio in the Mid East Cross Country Championships. This year's Team Illinois was one of the strongest in the 26 year history of the meet. 2012 marked only the second time in the past 12 years in which Illinois placed second or higher as a combined team. The girls' team took third behind Indiana and Ohio. The boys' team tied with Michigan with 42 points, but lost the tie-breaker, placing them second. Team Illinois has not placed as high as second as a combined team since 2005.
In the girls' race, Indiana's Ashley Erba won the title in a time of 17:21. Brooke Wolfe (Prospect) was the first finisher for Illinois, placing fifth in 18:20. Wolfe was followed by Palatine's Tess Wasowicz in 18:52 and Oswego's Kelsey Hjorth in 18:58. Lauren Poplawski (Prospect) was the fourth Illinois finisher in 19:02, followed by Hanna Winter (St. Viator) in 19:18. Maggie O'Loughlin (Marist) finished sixth for Illinois in 19:25. Casey Kramer (Yorkville) was the seventh Illinois runner in 19:29. Illinois was also represented by Megan Lemersal (Maine South) in 19:44, Lindsay Rogers (Chatham-Glenwood) in 19:45, Meg Tulley (Warren Township) in 19:57, Kelly Breen (Palatine Fremd) in 20:28, and Lauren Loomis (Shepard) in 20:45.
In the boys' race, Illinois made huge moves in the last mile to close the gap on Michigan, but came up one point short of the win. Due to the sixth runner tie-breaker, Illinois took second, marking a great improvement from last year's fourth place finish. Michigan's Nick Raymond won the race in 15:25. He was closely followed by Illinois' Riley McInerney (Charleston), who finished second in 15:37. Quentin Shaffer (Prospect) was third in 15:38. Jake Brown (Mt. Zion) finished fifth in 15:45. Minooka's Joey Santillo was the other top ten finisher for Illinois, coming in tenth in 15:54. Marcelo Burbano (Lane Tech) finished in 16:06, followed by Ryan Burgoon (Barrington) in 16:09. Illinois was also represented by Caleb Beck (Oswego) in 16:13, Alex Pierce (Minooka) in 16:28, Abel Hernandez (Shepard) in 16:40, Cameron Knudsen (Minooka) in 16:44, Zak Arcara (Yorkville) in 16:46, and Brandon Bonifer (Glenbard West) in 17:00.
