Congratulations to Team Illinois 2013!
On Saturday, November 16, 2013, the top senior girls and boys from the state of Illinois raced against the top seniors from Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio in the Mid East Cross Country Championships. Team Illinois boasted a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place finish in the highly competitive meet. This year, each race was truly balanced, as only 18 points separated 1st from 4th place in the girls’ race, and only 14 points separated 1st through 3rd place in the boys’ race. On the girls’ side, Illinois placed 4th with 63 points behind Indiana (45 points), Michigan (45 points), and Ohio (57 points). In the boys’ race, Illinois placed 2nd with 45 points. Ohio won with 39 points. Indiana followed with 53, and Michigan was fourth with 77 points. In the combined team standings, Team Illinois placed third.
In the girls' race, Michigan’s Megan O’Neil won the title in a time of 18:15. Ashley England was the first Illinois finisher in 4th place (18:39). She was followed by Rachel Devereux in 11th place (18:52), Kendall Cast in 14th (18:56), Vanessa Sanchez in 15th (18:58), and Emily Leonard in 19th (19:08). Meghan Carroll was next in 21st (19:11), followed closely by Claire Costelloe in 22nd (19:11), and Lexy Rudofski in 25th (19:23). Nicole Alfano was next for Illinois in 27th (19:26), followed by Annemarie Leonard in 40th (20:05), Michelle Borycki in 45th (20:17), and Mirae Mastrolonardo in 47th (21:08).
In the boys' race, Illinois worked hard to break up Ohio’s top 3 runners. While they succeeded and moved up well in the final mile of the race, they came up 6 points short of the title this year. Ohio’s Garrett Chrichlow won the race in 15:45. Dan Lathrop was Illinois’ first finisher in 4th place (15:56). He was followed by Zach Hird in 7th (16:00), Simon Thorpe in 8th (16:05), Chris Korabik in 11th (16:09), and Wal Khat in 15th (16:13). Nick Brey was the next finisher for Team Illinois in 19th (16:20), followed by Benjamin Richter in 26th (16:27), Will Giroux in 28th (16:29), Josh Maier in 30th (16:31), and Chris Kaminski in 31st (16:32). Bryan Quinonez finished in 42nd (16:42), and Harry Winter crossed in 47th (17:05), wrapping up the Illinois finishers.
Despite sloppy and slow conditions, the members of Team Illinois did not disappoint. They truly represent the best of the best when it comes to Illinois distance running, and they enjoyed the opportunity to come together in this prestigious senior-only competition. In a year when the Mid East Meet had to compete with Nike Cross Nationals for participants, these 24 athletes chose to race in Kettering, Ohio. Two competitors, Rachel Devereux and Chris Korabik, who raced and scored for Team Illinois, also had great races at Nike the following day. Great job to Rachel and Chris for being such tough competitors!
Team Illinois was coached by Lisa Cook (Oswego East), John Fuja (St. Viator), Paul McLeland (West Chicago), Jim Milner (Oswego East), and Torinn Pope (Mooseheart).
